Xero - Why can't I edit a supplier's bank account details?

What to do when Datamolino warns bank details can't be updated because you're missing the required Xero permission.

Written by Tina

Datamolino will warn you when a supplier's bank account details can't be updated in Xero - this is a Xero permission issue, not a problem with your Datamolino connection.

What changed

Since 29 June 2026, Xero requires the Bank Details Editing permission to add or update bank account details on an existing contact.

New contact vs. existing contact

👉 Can I still add bank details when creating a new contact?

Yes. When you create a brand new Xero contact from Datamolino, you can enter any bank account details before you click Save, regardless of this permission.

👉 What happens if I try to change bank details on a contact that already exists?

Once a contact has been saved in Xero, changing its bank account details needs the Bank account admin permission. Without it, Datamolino can't push the updated bank details to Xero.

👉 Will this stop my document from exporting?

No. You can still export the document to Xero - only the bank account details on the contact are left unchanged.

What you'll see

If you try to update bank details on an existing contact without the required Xero permission, Datamolino shows this error message:

"Bank details couldn't be updated because you don't have the required Xero permission. You can still export the document, but the bank details won't be updated in Xero."

Note: The document itself still exports normally. Only the bank account details are skipped - everything else on the contact and document is unaffected.

How to fix it

A Xero user with Manage users permission needs to enable Bank account admin for the affected user:

  1. In Xero, click your organisation name → Settings

  2. Click Users

  3. Select the affected user

  4. Open Contacts

  5. Tick Edit beside Bank details

  6. Click Update permissions

Once enabled, the user can add or update bank account details on existing contacts as before.
