View the original email and its attachments

How to open the email a document was imported from and review its body, sender, and attachments.

Written by Lubica Jakubac

The original email

If a document was emailed into Datamolino, the original email is stored alongside it - sender, subject, body, and all attachments - exactly as it was received. This means any context that came with the invoice stays accessible after the document has been processed. The email view is only available for documents that arrived by email. Documents uploaded through the web, mobile app, or API do not have an email attached.

👉 Why would I want to see the original email?

The email body often contains useful context that isn't on the invoice itself: a note from the supplier, a payment instruction, or additional attachments that weren't turned into separate documents. The original email keeps that context accessible after the document has been processed.

How to quickly view the email body

The quickest way to access the original email body is directly from the document.

  1. Open the document in Datamolino.

  2. In the document header, click the 'Show Email'.

👉 Can I attach the email body to the export?

Yes, for Xero and QuickBooks. You can convert the original email into a PDF attachment and export it alongside the document. This is useful when the email contains supporting context such as approvals or instructions. Learn more here [TODO: Export your supporting email communication to Xero]

Opening the email from Import History

You can also access the original email from Import History - useful when you can't find the invoice forwarded as this is where you can view all attachments and what happened to them.

  1. Open the folder, click the dropdown arrow next to the Import button, and select Import History.

  2. Switch to the Email history tab.

  3. Find the email and click Detail at the end of the row.

The Email history tab only lists emails that were accepted into the folder. If you can't find an email there, it may have been held as a stopped email because the sender was not approved yet. See more about stopped emails here [TODO: Stopped Emails]

What you can see in the email view

The email view is a read-only display of the email as Datamolino received it. You can see:

  • Sender - the email address the message was sent from.

  • Subject - the original email subject line.

  • Email body - the full message text, including any instructions or notes from the sender.

  • Attachments - every file that was attached to the email, including ones that were not turned into a separate document.

👉 How do I see which documents came out of this email?

From the email view, click Show next to an attachment to open the document that was created from it. This is the link back into the normal document flow, where you can edit fields, change coding, or export.

👉 Are attachments that were not processed kept too?

Yes. The email view lists every attachment that arrived in the email, including any that Datamolino did not turn into a document (for example, unsupported file types or files routed to the Files subfolder). Nothing is discarded - everything stays accessible from the original email.
