Supported bank statement formats

What kinds of bank statements you can upload: PDFs only, with limits on file size, page count, and password protection.

Supported file format

PDF is the only supported file format. Datamolino checks both the file extension and the file type (MIME type), so renaming a non-PDF file to .pdf will not work.

Both types of PDF are supported:

  • Electronic (native) PDFs - statements downloaded directly from your bank's online portal. These typically produce the best extraction results because the text is already embedded in the file.

  • Scanned PDFs - paper statements that have been scanned to PDF. Datamolino uses OCR to read these, so scan quality matters (see tips below).

CSV, Excel, Word, image files (JPG, PNG), and other formats are not supported for upload. If your bank provides statements in a non-PDF format, check whether they also offer a PDF download option.

File size and page limits

Each uploaded PDF must be within these limits:

  • Maximum file size: 60 MB

  • Maximum pages: 50 pages per PDF

If your statement exceeds 50 pages, split it into smaller PDFs before uploading. Most PDF viewers and free online tools can split a large PDF by page range.

Password-protected and infected files

Datamolino cannot process files that are locked or unsafe:

  • Password-protected PDFs are not supported. If your bank sends password-protected statements, open the file with the password in a PDF reader and re-save it without protection before uploading.

  • Virus-infected files are rejected automatically during upload.

Tips for best results

👉 My scanned statement came out with errors. What can I do to improve quality?

Scan quality has the biggest impact on extraction accuracy. When scanning paper statements:

  • Use a resolution of at least 200 dpi (300 dpi is better).

  • Make sure the page is straight and fully visible - cropped edges or skewed scans cause missed data.

  • Avoid dark or uneven backgrounds that reduce contrast.

  • Include the opening and closing balances on the statement if possible. Datamolino uses these to verify that all transactions have been captured correctly.

👉 Should I use the electronic PDF from my bank or scan a printed copy?

Always use the electronic PDF when your bank offers one. Electronic PDFs contain machine-readable text, which produces faster and more accurate extraction than scanned documents. Only scan a paper statement if no electronic version is available.

What happens when a file does not meet requirements

If your uploaded file fails a check, Datamolino will set it to an error state with a clear label explaining the problem:

  • Invalid file type - the file is not a PDF. Upload a PDF version of your statement instead.

  • Too many pages - the statement has more pages than the current limit (50) allows. Split the PDF into smaller files and upload them separately.

  • Password protected file - the PDF is locked with a password. Remove the password protection and re-upload.

In each case, the original file is not processed. You will need to fix the issue and upload a new file.
